Eric Asimov of the New York Times suggests a dozen little-known but “thrilling” wines to explore: Assyrtiko: This white wine grape from the volcanic island of Santorini “produces dry, deliciously minerally wines” that pair well with seafood. Frappato: These grapes from southeastern Sicily make “lovely, fresh and lively wines that are delicious summer reds, especially when lightly chilled.” Fumin: At around $35 a bottle, “these wines are not cheap but are stunningly good.” Grignolino: This Italian grape “makes a pale, easy-drinking red” that is perfect for “casual drinking, perhaps with salumi or pizza.” Romorantin: Ancient French grapes “make utterly succulent whites that are perfect balances between sharp citrus freshness and rounded floral, honeyed flavors.” For the complete list, click here.
