BlackBerry maker Research In Motion beat its own forecasts for the second quarter, earning profits of $287.7 million, twice what it made the same quarter last year. Earnings were predicted to jump from 50 cents a share to between 59 and 63 next quarter.The company is growing at breakneck speed, reaching 10 million users the second quarter.

Company officials said diversification of their product kept growth strong through the summer slump. RIM has been reaching beyond the traditional BlackBerry business domain into the consumer market, where demand is growing as web-enabled smart phones proliferate. The company has shipped out 20 million handsets, which are now available from about 325 carriers around the world.
