"It was the mercy of God," the baby girl's mother told the Wall Street Journal. She had tried to rush to her home's second floor to rescue the baby as the quake hit but was forced to turn back as the building crumbled. Another survivor, a 69-year-old woman, was dragged alive from the ruins of Port-au-Prince's cathedral yesterday. The rescues offered hope to teams still searching for survivors despite ever-slimmer odds. The international effort has rescued nearly 100 people from collapsed buildings so far, according to UN figures. "The search and rescue has been a fantastic success this time," a UN official says. "They've pulled out more people than is normally the case." Read These Next A game of doorbell ditch turns fatal for 11-year-old. Is India, under hefty tariffs, turning away from the US?
