The film's based on the GQ article of the same name, chronicling author Devin Friedman’s attempt to diversify his circle of white buddies. Combine Friedman’s “acerbic wit and Rock’s comedic timing,” and you could end up with “a comedy with a razor-sharp political-cultural edge,” writes Emily Riemer in Paste.
