Country Singer Tanner Usrey Faces DWI, Drug Charges

Rising country star Tanner Usrey is facing serious drug and DWI charges in Texas following his arrest earlier this week. The 32-year-old was taken into custody Monday in McKinney, a Dallas suburb, and is charged with a second DWI offense and two felony drug counts, according to court and sheriff's office records obtained by Fox News. The DWI, a Class A misdemeanor in Texas, can bring jail time, fines, and a lengthy license suspension.

  • The more severe allegations center on fentanyl. Usrey is accused of possessing between 4 and 200 grams of a substance in "Penalty Group 1/1-B," which covers "fentanyl or fentanyl-derived substances" under Texas law, Fox reports. Usrey insists, however, that he has never "knowingly possessed or ingested fentanyl."

The Penalty Group 1/1-B count is a second-degree felony carrying a possible two- to 20-year prison term and up to a $10,000 fine. He also faces a separate felony charge tied to Penalty Group 2 drugs, which include certain stimulants and hallucinogens. Usrey, best known for hits including "Beautiful Lies" and "Come Back Down," was released the same day on $12,500 bond. Usrey rep Layne Lindroth tells PennLive that "numerous outlets have misrepresented the facts of the case, definitively reporting fentanyl possession when that is simply not true."

  • "This past Monday morning, after attending a birthday party, I was arrested for possession of drugs and a DWI," Usrey said in a statement provided by Lindroth. "I know situations like this can be disappointing, and I take responsibility for putting myself in a position where this could happen." He added: "There has been speculation that I was arrested for possessing fentanyl or fentanyl-laced substances. Because this is an ongoing legal matter, I've been advised to keep my comments limited. What I can say is that fentanyl is an extremely dangerous and deadly drug, and its impact on this country is undeniable."

  • "At no time have I knowingly possessed or ingested fentanyl, and I would never condone that behavior," Usrey said. He said the substances involved are being tested. "I have no reason to believe the results will show the presence of fentanyl, and I would genuinely be surprised if they did," he said. "That said, if fentanyl were to be detected, I would view this situation as a blessing in disguise, one that may have ultimately protected me from something much worse."
  • He said his focus now is "on learning from this, making better decisions, and coming out the other side a better man."
The Texas native, who released albums in 2023 and 2025, remains booked for several upcoming festival dates, including a Kid Rock–linked event in May. He's also scheduled to play the Fiesta Oyster Bake in San Antonio on April 18, MySA reports.
