President Trump and first lady Melania Trump marked 24 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks at a service at the Pentagon on Thursday. While traditionally observed near the building's memorial outside the Pentagon's walls, the event was moved to the internal courtyard following the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk, according to a White House official. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to Kirk in their remarks, the AP reports. Developments include:

  • Trump says: "Savage monsters attacked the very symbols of our civilization. Yet here in Virginia and in New York and in the skies over Pennsylvania, Americans did not hesitate. They stood on their feet, and they showed the world that we will never yield, we will never bend, we will never give up, and our great American flag will never, ever fail." He told stories about a few of the people killed in the terrorist attacks, per CNN. And he strayed from the moment to say the country was "dead" under his predecessor. "Now we have the hottest country anywhere in the world," Trump said.
  • In New York: As a bell tolled and bagpipes played at a memorial plaza, survivors and family members of the almost 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks read the names. The ritual has been repeated every year, per the New York Times. More people have been killed since that day, including first responders who rushed to the World Trade Center, by illnesses tied to toxic materials in the air and in the rubble than in the immediate attack. A woman who lives in North Carolina said she goes to New York twice a year—on Sept. 11 and Jan. 16, the birthday of her son, Alexander, who was killed in the north tower at age 28. "What I want is for people to remember," said Valentina Lygin.

  • In Pennsylvania: The names of the 246 airplane passengers and crew members who died in the crash of hijacked United Flight 93 were read aloud in a ceremony at the state capitol in Harrisburg, per Penn Live. A remembrance also was held in Shanksville, where the airliner crashed, that included a reading of the victims' names, moments of silence, and remarks.
  • Yankee Stadium: Trump was scheduled to attend the Tigers-Yankees game on Thursday evening in New York as part of the 9/11 commemoration. Workers installed security glass outside a suite on the third base side jn preparation, per the AP. Security around the stadium was tight even four hours before first pitch, with every entrance featuring metal detectors and Secret Service agents while NYPD helicopters thundered overhead. Flags for each of MLB's 30 teams that ring the stadium were lowered to half-staff after Trump issued an executive order honoring Kirk.
