A popular French streamer died on camera during a livestreamed online challenge. Raphaël Graven, 46, who went by Jean Pormanove or JP online, was one of the most popular streamers in France on the Kick platform, per CNN. The military veteran was known for streaming himself playing video games, as well as participating in "extreme" challenges during which he was mocked, berated, or even assaulted by other streamers. It was almost 12 days into one such challenge when viewers noticed he had stopped moving. Some donated money in order to be able to send messages to the other streamers, who were sleeping in the same room, about Graven's condition. His death is now under investigation, the BBC reports.
Graven was sometimes subjected to sleep deprivation during the challenges, and in the one in which he was participating at the time of his death, participants were woken up by a leafblower, a revving engine, and, for Graven, a bucket of water being tossed on him. One of his co-streamers insists Graven undertook the challenges and submitted to the treatment voluntarily, but some have raised concerns. Past challenges saw Graven being shot at with paintball guns, drenched with paint and oil, beaten, and even strangled, the Guardian reports. One segment featured a message he reportedly sent to his mother saying he was being "held prisoner" by his fellow streamers, but one of them insists through a lawyer that Graven's mother participated in staged stunts with her son and the other streamers. Graven reportedly suffered from cardiovascular issues.
