Colombian Presidential Hopeful Dies Weeks After Being Shot

Colombian conservative senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died Monday, more than two months after being shot in the head during a campaign rally in western Bogota. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed the 39-year-old's death early Monday, reports the AP. Uribe Turbay was critically wounded on June 7 during a campaign rally in the country's capital, suffering gunshot wounds to the head and leg. He underwent emergency surgery, multiple surgeries thereafter, and remained hospitalized in intensive care until his death. He had experienced bleeding in the brain over the weekend as his condition deteriorated, notes the New York Times.

"You will always be the love of my life," Uribe's wife, María Claudia Tarazona, wrote on Instagram. "Wait for me, because when I fulfill my promise to our children, I will come looking for you and we will have our second chance." A 14-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene of the shooting in June, and authorities have since detained three adults and charged them with using a minor to commit a crime. The incident has raised renewed concerns about political violence in the country.
