World's Most Walkable Cities

Residents of Milan, Italy, would be able to forego their cars for a good pair of walking shoes better than most. A new study of the world's "most walkable cities" in Nature and detailed at the Economist ranks Milan as No. 1. Locals can find everything they need under a seven-minute walk, as can residents of second-place Copenhagen. As for the car-centric US, you won't find a single city in the top 50. (Or any from North America, for that matter.) The top rankings and other details:

1. Milan, Italy: 6 minutes, 24 seconds
2. Copenhagen, Denmark: 6 minutes, 36 seconds
3. Turin, Italy: 7 minutes, 6 seconds
4. Dublin, Ireland: 7 minutes, 24 seconds (tie)
5. Lyon, France: 7 minutes, 24 seconds (tie)
6. Munich, Germany: 7 minutes, 30 seconds
7. Paris, France, 8 minutes, even
8. Marseille, France: 8 minutes, 6 seconds (tie)
9. Genoa, Italy: 8 minutes, 6 seconds (tie)
10. Edinburgh, Scotland: 8 minutes, 12 seconds (tie)
11. Berlin, Germany: 8 minutes, 12 seconds (tie)

• Odds and ends: The top non-Europe finisher was Kyoto, Japan, at No. 28. Vancouver was the top North American city at No. 53. Manhattan gets credit for being extremely walkable, but other parts of New York City hurt the city's score.
