Six of 10 pundits Salon asked what Barack Obama should do about the Jeremiah Wright problem say the candidate must get rid of the reverend. Andrew Sullivan calls Wright’s latest remarks “bitter and racist” and “a provocation"; he must be "clearly and irrevocably disowned." Martin Kaplan calls Wright “part of the negative politics that our country needs to transcend.”

There are some Wright admirers in the group, and some who think the candidate should just change the subject forcefully, perhaps with a landmark speech on a more important issue. But Houston Baker says the senator’s responses up to this point have been “pandering disaster” and that there’s no losing Wright now. The pastor has “magnetically and materialistically affixed himself to the broadside of the Obama bus.”
