The quake, which was initially reported at 6.8, hit about 100 miles west of Ferndale at 6:50am local time, per USGS, meaning it was centered in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 6.2 miles. (Ferndale is about 20 miles south of Eureka and 260 miles north of San Francisco.) There are no reports yet of injuries or damage.
