President Obama appointed ex-venture capitalist Julius Genachowski in 2009; his term saw the commission halt a proposed T-Mobile-AT&T merger, the Wall Street Journal notes. This week, the FCC's top Republican commissioner, Robert McDowell, also announced his departure. Obama will nominate a new Democratic chairman and Republican commissioner in the coming days, according to FCC rules, Reuters notes.
