(AP) After taking a pounding in the polls for months, Democrats are gaining ground ahead of the 2010 election. Over the last month, they’ve cut the GOP lead in half on the question of which party’s candidates voters support, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, and Democratic candidates have taken leads over their Republican opponents in several individual races. Overall, however, things are still looking good for Republicans. Among likely voters, the elephants have a 49%-43% edge on the congressional ballot, a big swing from 2006, when Democrats led by 12 points. Polls show Republican voters are much more invested in the election than their Democratic counterparts, with nearly three-quarters saying it was more important than other congressional elections in their lifetimes.
